Yesterday, a week before St George’s feast day, our parish celebrated the conclusion of the Novena days in honour of St George’s; a fabulous start for the festa week in honour of Gozo’s Patron saint.
The nine-day experience leading to St George’s feast, traditionally known as the Novena, came to a most fitting end with many members of our parish community stating positive comments on its outcome. In a few words, it has been a rewarding success: rewarding, because it proved right the genuine efforts of the young volunteers at the parish office; and success, since it drew to the basilica many children and their parents for nine days of spiritual and catechetical preparation for St George’s feast.
To conclude, the beautiful statue of St George Victorious, or San Ġorġ ta’ barra, was carried shoulders high inside the jam-packed church amidst the cheerful singing of Georgius natus est and the joyous clapping of hands. A true prelude indeed for the coming days!
Archpriest Joseph Curmi thanked all those who helped out in the organisation of the Novena and also the members of our community who participated in the nine Thursdays leading to the Feast, which started as early as May.
A party for all children and their families followed in St George’s Square.
