Today is April 23, the liturgical solemnity of St George, Patron Saint of Gozo.

Devotees of the saint around the globe celebrate the day of his martyrdom, in a time of great persecution against Christians in various world regions.  In this context, the figure of George of Lydda shines more than ever as a true beam of witness to Our Lord.

The April festivity of St George is almost exclusively focused on the liturgical and spiritual dimension. The statue of the Saint was discreetly taken out of its niche on Sunday in preparation for a sober Triduum.  During these three days of ‘preparation’ Archpriest Mgr Joseph Curmi led the 7.00pm Mass, which was followed by solemn adoration of the Eucharist, the recitation of the Rosary, the Prayer for the intercession of St George, prayers for the benefactors of the Parish and finally sacramental benediction was given.  Following the three days of Solemn Triduum, our parish community yesterday night celebrated a Solemn Ecumenical Vigil at St George’s Square.
