The Liturgical Calendar of the Diocese of Gozo celebrates today the Feast of St George, Patron Saint of Gozo.
Since April 23 this year fell within the Octave of Easter, in accordance with the Universal Norms on the Liturgical Year and the General Roman Calendar, which states that the first eight days of Easter Time constitute the Octave of Easter and are celebrated as Solemnities of the Lord, thus excluding the possibility of any other liturgical memorial in that period, the Solemnity of St George has been rightly transferred to the first day outside the Octave.
At 7.00pm, HL Mgr Anton Teuma, Bishop of Gozo, will preside a Pontifical High Mass at St George’s Basilica. At 6.30pm, the Collegiate Chapter will celebrate the Second Solemn Vespers.
The Vigil of the Martyrdom of St George was held yesterday at 8.00pm in St George’s Square, in a glorious celebration. For the occasion, the titular statue of St George was taken out from the Basilica, accompanied by religious hymns. The vigil liturgy took around an hour. The Laudate Pueri Choir sang psalms and parts of the Litany to St George. Archpriest Mgr Joseph Curmi presided.
