While we wish you all a Happy Victory Day, on this very significant day for our nation, here is another update on the works, recommenced last week, on the museum project, together with some “fresh” photos from the site at St George’s Square and Charity Street. The cool wind that had been so kind to the working crew during the first day of the resumed work on the museum site had died down by the dawn of Wednesday, September 1, 2010. The second day of demolition and clearance dawned hot. But it brought with it a fine surprise.

Mixed emotions on Basilica's 52nd anniversary

Today's fifty-second anniversary of St George’s basilica title won’t go down in history exactly as a “joyous” day. Even though the Basilica’s splendid set of Barigozzi bells has announced the celebration, Gozo is in mourning after yesterday evening’s tragic explosion at the Farrugia Brothers fireworks factory in Għarb, which has left among its victims friends and members of our parish community.

Steady… and at the contractor’s go, a handful of workers put their hands to pick and shovel, and started to move the tons of soil, lose building stones and debris towards the hydraulic carriers awaiting to carry it to the huge trucks sitting in St George’s Square. Not a long way but tortuous for the constricted space the bobcat had to move around and for the narrowness of the short distance from the museum site to the south-eastern access to the square.

Ten years from Archpriest Emanuel Mercieca's death

A week ago, Friday 28 August 2010, was the tenth anniversary from the demise of Mgr Emanuel Mercieca, archpriest of St George’s Basilica between 1976 and 1986. Besides being the first archpriest of the new Collegiate of St George’s, Mgr Mercieca was the mastermind behind the development of the main parish of Gozo from the early fifties of the last century onwards.

Work on Basilica Museum site resumes tomorrow

After an interruption of almost five months, work on the site of the new historical and cultural museum is resuming tomorrow, Tuesday 31 August 2010. Demolishing had started on April 7, 2010, but was suspended after difficulties arose concerning part of the property. This problem has been resolved and work on the Fondazzjoni Belt Victoria’s project can now resume at a fast pace.

An entity which we are privileged to host as part of our parish structure is the Gozo Volunteers section of the Order of Malta. They have their quarters on the first floor of Dar Leħen il-Belt Victoria, or the parish domus curialis, at St George’s Square, Victoria. It is a service which the parish gladly offers to one of the most active charitable institutions in Europe, which also has deep roots in the history of our islands. One of the latest news which we would like to share with the readers of our parish website comes from Malteser, the German Ambulance Corps of the Order of Malta (SMOM), which recently donated two taillift minibuses to Gozo.

Il-Belt Victoria's 175th edition out for Santa Marija weekend

The July-August 2010 special post-festa edition of the parish bimonthly Il-Belt Victoria is out, and it is being distributed in the parish households throughout this weekend, when Malta and Gozo are celebrating Santa Marija, the popular name for today’s Catholic solemnity of the Assumption of Our Lady, the Marian mystery which is also the titular of Gozo’s Cathedral church.

Prof. Guido de Marco's demise saddens St George's community

Though it’s probably not the best time for breaking news or internet browsing, and most of Gozo is having a good rest at the seaside, these days of mid-August have brought along one big sad news: the President emeritus of the Republic of Malta and old friend of St George’s Basilica, Prof. Guido de Marco, has passed away. He died yesterday, Thursday 12 August 2010, in the late afternoon, at the Mater Dei Hospital, at Tal-Qroqq, aged 79. That’s why this parish website, though having its deserved Summer rest, is compelled to hail a great man and friend.

A Novena BBQ

Who said BBQs are only a great start for the festa period? St George’s festa is past by two weeks now, and we’re still partying! St George creates a festive atmosphere which makes us want to celebrate all year round. That’s what we’ve just done last Friday night, on the parish house rooftop: a BBQ of thanks to all actors who took part in this year’s Novena of St George and a fundrasing activity in support of the parish’s pastoral activity.
