Crowds flock to St George's Parade in Manchester Ben Rooth 22/ 4/2007
A CELEBRATION of multi-cultural Manchester was at the heart of this year's St George's Day celebrations.
Around 5,000 people flocked to the city centre to observe the fourth annual parade.
Floats from 49 different groups, including brass bands, belly dancers, shire horses and community groups and other community associations processed from Varley Street, in Miles Platting, to Piccadilly in aid of the Five Stars Scanner Appeal around noon.
Earlier in the morning the police had turned away a float entered by the British National Party on the grounds that political groups are not permitted to exhibit.
Organiser Jack Bradshaw, from Fallowfield who was dressed as King Henry VIII said that the event is intended to show what a culturally integrated city Manchester has become.
"This parade is all about celebrating English culture and here in Manchester that culture manifests itself by everyone living in harmony," he said.
"I think that it's important that we celebrate life in this exceptional city and particularly the multi-culturism that is at its heart. I'm delighted to say that the event is going from strength to strength. We started four year ago with 10 floats and 60 people and this year we're up to 49 floats and 600 people."
Belle Vue
Music was supplied by the Oldham Scottish Pipe Band, Belle Vue Brass Band and Macclesfield Band among other groups. Justine Gibb , 43 from Sale Royal British Legion dressed as King Richard III for the event and accompanied a float containing Sale's former carnival king and queen, nine-year-old Heather Gibb-Shacklock and her seven-year-old brother Matthew.
"It's always a fun event to take part in and we are delighted to be able to raise our profile while also fund raising for the Five Stars Scanner Appeal," she said. "There's a terrific atmosphere despite the rain and I think that it's a fitting way to celebrate cultural life in Manchester.
Onlooker Christine Barrett, 70, from Moss Side said: "It's the first time that I've been and its nice to see so many people enjoying themselves. I was here a few weeks ago for the St Patrick's Day celebrations and this event deserves to grow to be just as popular."
Jean Egan from Fallowfield said that it was a "good family day out".
"I've come along with my daughter and granddaughter and it's nice to be able to celebrate St George's Day in this way here in the city we know and love."

Happy feast to all members of St George’s parish community on this special day of April 23. May our ardent love for this very special patron saint of ours give fruit in a spirit of witness to the Risen Christ. This lies at the very heart of the meaning of this feast. Greetings from Edinburgh.
